Power Medical Interventions Logo Power Medical Interventions (PMI) has recently achieved an FDA approval for its 510(k) application for the firm’s iDrive Intelligent Power Unit, detachable Intelligent Surgical Instruments and iConsole device. PMI is believed to be a leader in the field of developing and commercializing Intelligent Surgical Instruments. Following the FDA clearance these devices are believed to soon be made commercially available.

The iDrive is believed to have been designed to support an array of minimally invasive procedures which may prove to be very helpful and handy to surgeons. This first-of-its-kind device may provide surgeons with a variety of cutting and stapling configurations with an enhanced flexibility, accuracy and access. This hand-held, computer-controlled power unit is believed to allow the attachment of all the Intelligent Surgical Instruments. In other words by allowing all the surgical instruments to be driven by a single power unit, this may aid in significantly cutting down costs. Apart from this, the iDrive is also stated to be consumer friendly, reusable, cost effective and less wasteful.

On the other hand, the iConsole is stated to be a proprietary wireless device, which during surgery may be able to directly correspond with the iDrive. They may be able to communicate output specific auditory and visual reference data through the device’s liquid crystal display and speaker.

Michael Whitman, president and chief executive office of Power Medical Interventions, says that, “The iDrive and iConsole are the latest examples of Power Medical Interventions’ commitment to pioneering continued innovation in the surgical arena. These instruments will deliver critical advantages to surgeons offering single handed use, flexibility, and access to remote anatomical sites. PMI’s Intelligent Surgical Instruments have applications in open surgery, minimally invasive surgery and the emerging field of natural orifice translumenal endoscopic surgery (NOTES).”

Whitman goes on to say that, “At the same time, these new instruments are designed to reduce healthcare costs and improve hospitals’ operational efficiency. Our hospital customers will now be able to acquire PMI’s advanced stapling technology at a greatly reduced cost. The iDrive/iConsole combination offers a single power unit to drive all of our Intelligent Surgical Instruments, eliminating the need to purchase multiple power units. The cost savings is passed along to our hospital customers. Furthermore, the reusable and autoclavable nature of these instruments plays a key role in helping to reduce medical waste, offering additional meaningful benefits to our hospital customers.”

Seemingly, the iDrive and iConsole may together bring forth a revolutionary technology solution. Power Medical Interventions is apparently hoping to develop several key enhancements which may provide surgeons with the first ever wireless computer mediated platform with outstanding abilities. Its abilities may even include Internet access, wireless video processing, controlled tissue compression software and a patient record interface.
